Notes: Globe gores are a set of map interruptions or sectors as designed by Johannes Schoner (1477-1547) which paste together to form a geometrically curved sphere. This technique reached a climax as Vicenzo Maria Coronelli, the Venetian cartographer, was noted to be the finest globe maker in the entire world. He also established the first geographical Society known as the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was appointed Cosmographer of the Venice Republic, and later become a theologian and Father General of the Franciscan Order.
