Notes: This map is from 'A General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps of All the Known Countries in the World, Constructed from the Latest Authority. Written and Engraved by Jos. Perkins, Philadelphia. Baltimore: Published by Fielding Lucas, Jun, No. 138, Market Street. Baltimore.1823'. This is the first edition, first state of one of the finest 'general' atlases published in the US at that time and was broader in coverage than either the Tanner (published the same year) or the Finley (published 3 years later). While most of the maps were engraved by BT Welch or Young & Delker, several were engraved by JVN Throop, Cone & Freeman, and Kneass. They are wonderfully detailed and delicately colored. Lucas was a major contributor to the 1822 Carey & Lea atlas, but the maps from Lucas' Atlas are far superior.
