Notes: Joppen; Betz #34; This is Giovanni Magini's modern map of Africa from his edition of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographia. It is basically a slightly-reduced version of the D'Anania 1582 map of Africa, which in turn was modeled after Ortelius' 1570 map. The shape of Africa on the map is quite accurate for this period, and considerable geographical details along the African coasts are shown. Giovanni Magini (1555-1617), originally from Padua, was professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna; scale measured on 10 degrees of latitude
