Notes: Swann; hand-drawn mission map in ink stenciled manuscript map on soft cotton cloth signed "Saml E Mann, Pelham N.H." in ink at lower right; hanging loops sewn to upper edge. 40x57 inches; several pencil annotations; few faint stains, but quite well preserved. New Hampshire, circa 1900 A rare surviving hand-made missionary map centering on the Free State of Congo which existed from 1885 to 1908. Samuel Mann was a Massachusetts-based cartographer who produced maps of this kind for the American Baptist Missionary Union (A.M.B.U) pertaining to the areas in which their work was being undertaken. The Union's evangelical efforts in the Congo region began in 1884.
