Notes: | [SWAEN SOURCE] A large and quite detailed chart of the African island of Madagascar by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. The interior of the island is littered with forests, mountains, hills, towns and villages. The coast is full of bays, inlets, sandbanks, ports and harbors. Rhumb lines, mileage scales and an inset of the canal that separates Madagascar from Mozambique. With the stamp of the 'Depot de la Marine.'; A fine early sea chart of the island of Madagascar, published by the French Hydrographical Department. This chart was produced by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), France's preeminent maritime cartographer and the Premier Ing?ieur of the Depot de la Marine (the French Hydrographical Office), as well as the Official Hydrographer of the King Louis XV. Appearing in volume 2 of Bellin's 'Hydrographie Francoise', one of the most important compilations of Sea Charts published in the 18th Century. |
