Notes: [Curtis Wright source] This hand colored map of South Africa was published in Paris by Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois in 1830. It shows an interesting mix of European colonization efforts along the coast and African tribal kingdoms across the interior. Brittan and Portugal had established interests in the southern and eastern areas, respectively. Accompanying annotations reference these local people or geographic features. Dotted outlines reflect unknown information and highlight the relative uncertainty of African cartography throughout much of the 19th century.
